Gyeonggi Gapyung Hwaaksan Mountain Climb in Korea

Date and Time : April 19, 2018 09:00~15:30 (6 hours and 30 minutes including break one hour).
2.     Location : Gapyung at Gyeonggi Province in Korea.
3. Distance and Course : About 15.48km. Course is to start Hwaak Tunnel Parking Lot => Four Way Junction => Three Way Junction => Hwaaksan Summit (1,446.1 m Altitude) => Back to Hwaak Tunnel Parking Lot.
4.     Access :
There is various ways to connect Subway Line No.2 which you are supposed to get off at Gangbyun Station and walking to Dong Seoul Bus Terminal through Gangbyun Station, Gate No. 2 changing to Inter City Bus bound for Gapyung Bus Terminal. You are requested to stay on bus about one hour and half an hour and get off at Gapyung Bus Terminal changing to local taxi to Hwaaksan Tunnel. Please refer more details at “Transportation from Dong Seoul Bus Terminal to Hwaaksan Samji Park”. Please ask the taxi driver stop at Hwaaksan Tunnel Parking at Hwacheon in Gangwon province. You should book the same taxi asking him to come to the Parking Lot at what time he is going to pick you up. Otherwise it should be so difficult to arrange any public transportation at Hwaak Tunnel. You could on the way back take reverse way to your destination from Gapyung Bus Terminal. I could roughly estimate total transportation is about two hour and 30 minutes for one way which comes total 5 hours for round trip. But you would reduce this transportation time to 4 hours for round trip in case you use private car or rent car which you could save one hour for the transportation.
4.     Overall Remarks.
Hwaaksan (Mt. 1,468m), the best out of 5 mountains of Gyeonggi, rises high at the diverging point between Gangwon-do and Gyeonggi-do. It is the highest peak in Gyeonggi-do. Centering Hwaaksan, Maebong (Peak) is in the east and Jungbong (Peak) is in the west, and they are called Samhyeongjebong (Peak, Three Brothers Peaks).
Water originating from here to Hwaakcheon (Stream) becomes the mainstream of Gapyeongchoen (Stream) and then flows into Bukhangang (River). As the surrounding area of the summit is designated military zone, it is prohibited to enter there. So we should only be satisfied with looking up the top nearby.
Now Jungbong (Peak), 1km from the top to the southwest, serves as the top of Hwaaksan (Mt.). On the main ridgeline, you can look down the area of Gapyeong, Chuncheon, which enhances fun in hiking.
5.     Detailed Course Information
There are several climbing courses at Hwaaksan Mountain climbing from Gapyung area and Hwacheon area. I choose the most easy way and short cut way starting from Hwaak Tunnel parking Lot at Hwacheon District in Gangwon province. As you see at the photo, I should cross over the Hwaaksan Road and starting to move on Hwaaksan Mountain Road and slowly walking on this mountain road, less sloped and wider, easy walking and unpaved road. As I walked on this road for about 40 minutes, I reached Four Way Junction standing at paved road and indicating to Hwaaksan Summit (Jungbong). I turned right at the junction and kept walking up the uphill. There was nothing particular at this road since this road is principally for military use. I continuously walked on this road for about some more than one hour and reached landmark stating as 700m to the Summit. As I kept walking for about 10 minutes, I reached three Way Junction where the one to 200m to Jungbong and the other to military base. No more paved road after this Junction and instead very rough rocky and sloped road as see at the Photo. I struggled on this tough and rough road for about 15 minutes and found landmark saying as 100m to the Summit. I took a break at the middle of the road between the Three Way Junction and this landmark. But it was really bad weather, higher level of dust contents in the air so that I could not enjoy delicious meal and instead quickly disposes the lunch box as quickly as possible. As I walked for about 20 minutes, I finally reached Hwaaksan Summit (Jungbong), 1446.1m Altitude. I could not anything on top due to bad dust weather and tried to quickly come down to the Hwaak Tunnel Parking Lot through the same road and returned the Parking Lot after about 2 hours downhill.
